CertPub

Encrypted messages and transactions
across national borders

What is CertPub?

CertPub is a service that simplifies and secures communication and transactions between businesses and across national borders.

CertPub makes it possible for businesses to send encrypted messages and transactions in a simple way, such as when communicating between banks, transferring encrypted payment files and sending encrypted EHF invoices.

The service has been developed by, among others, Commfides on the initiative of the Norwegian Digitalisation Agency and Bits (the banking and financial industry’s infrastructure company).

CertPub is based on a common European standard for secure file transfer, PEPPOL, which facilitates secure and flexible communication, transfers and commerce. All businesses that are to receive messages in CertPub need an Enterprise Certificate.

More about CertPub

How CertPub works

CertPub includes certificates for various purposes. Each company that will receive messages must have an Enterprise Certificate. When a business performs a transaction through CertPub, the recipient’s certificate is automatically retrieved and the transfer is encrypted throughout.

To get started

To get started, the company that will receive messages orders an Enterprise Certificate. The company chooses which service to use, and Commfides makes the certificate available in CertPub. Commfides operates the CertPub service, and the Enterprise Certificate is automatically renewed after three years.

Users

The first to use CertPub are banks that use the service for their secure communication and system providers that handle EHF invoices and messages.

It is expected that several industries will adopt CertPub in the coming years, for example within the health sector, the police and NAV. Businesses that exchange data with these industries will then need CertPub.

Areas of use

  • Payment transfer with ISO20022
  • Interbank communication

Uses of CertPub

CertPub is mainly used for encryption, but can also be used for signing.

End-to-end encryption

The business that will send the message uses the recipient's public key to encrypt the message. The recipient uses their private key in CertPub to decrypt the message.

signing

Businesses can also publish their public key for signing messages. The recipient then uses the sender's public key to trace who signed the message.
